In recognition of Mental Health Month, NAMI Fort Wayne will offer a free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training class for a public audience on Thursday, May 21, from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at Chad’s House, 3333 Lake Ave, Fort Wayne 46805. Similar to CPR, this evidence-based training empowers people to directly ask about suicide, provide hope, and connect at-risk individuals to professional care.
Research shows QPR training increases knowledge and confidence in helping those in crisis. QPR saves lives!
In this one-evening course, you will learn how to
- Recognize Warning Signs: Participants learn to identify behavioral, verbal, and situational clues that someone may be considering suicide
- Take Immediate Action: It provides practical steps to intervene, such as directly asking about suicide (Question), persuading them to seek help (Persuade), and referring them to resources (Refer)
- The importance of safety during hard times: Having a conversation about temporarily reducing access to lethal means can mean the difference between life and death
The training is designed for the general public, not just professionals, and can be completed in one evening.
The class will be co-taught by Pamela Cashdollar of Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana and Colleen Carpenter of Stop Suicide of Northeast Indiana and Action Over Silence.
Preregistration is requested, click this link. Please register by May 20th.
CEUs will be available for professionals; the process for claiming the credit will be explained at the event.
